Founding of the Parish
San Lorenzo Ruiz De Manila Parish was established to serve the growing Catholic community in the area. Named after the first Filipino saint, the parish was born from a desire to create a spiritual home that celebrates Filipino Catholic identity and devotion. A small group of devoted faithful gathered for the first Masses in a modest chapel.
Building the Community
As the neighborhood grew, so did the parish. New families joined, ministries were formed, and the community deepened its roots. San Lorenzo Ruiz First Filipino Saint & Martyr
c. 1600 – September 27, 1637 | Canonized October 18, 1987
“I am a Catholic and wholeheartedly do accept death for God. Had I a thousand lives, all these to Him I shall offer.” — San Lorenzo Ruiz, his final witness
Lorenzo Ruiz was born around 1600 in Binondo, Manila — the heart of the Chinese-Filipino community. The son of a Chinese father and a Filipino mother, he was raised in the Catholic faith and served as a sacristan at the Binondo Church, where his love for God and devotion to the Blessed Mother took deep root.
Lorenzo married and lived a quiet, faithful life as a family man. However, in 1636, he was falsely accused of a crime. Seeking safety, he joined a missionary group led by Dominican priests heading to Japan — unaware that he was walking toward a profound act of martyrdom.
His Missionary Journey
Lorenzo and his companions arrived in Okinawa and later traveled to Japan during one of the most brutal periods of Christian persecution in the country. The Tokugawa shogunate had outlawed Christianity, and thousands of believers were being hunted, tortured, and killed. Despite knowing the danger, Lorenzo and his fellow missionaries pressed forward in their witness to Christ.
His Martyrdom
Arrested in 1637, Lorenzo endured months of horrific torture designed to force him to renounce his Catholic faith. He was subjected to water torture, hung upside down over a pit, and physically mutilated. Through it all, he refused to deny Christ. On September 27, 1637, after three days of hanging, Lorenzo Ruiz died — a martyr for the faith he loved more than life itself.
His Enduring Legacy
Beatified in Manila by Pope John Paul II on February 18, 1981, and canonized on October 18, 1987 in Rome, San Lorenzo Ruiz became the first Filipino saint. He is the patron of the Philippines, Filipino youth, overseas Filipino workers, and all who face persecution for their faith. His story continues to inspire millions across the globe.
